After Many years of excellence in sports, Aminu Kurfi is delving into mainstream politics; let’s appreciate the kingsmaker

Kurfi is one of 34 Local Government Areas that makes up Katsina State. It is situated in the Central Senatorial Districts of Katsina State and shares boundaries with Batagarawa LGA in the North, Charanchi LGA in the East, Dutsin-Ma LGA in the South, Safana and Batsari LGA in the West.

The districts under Kurfi Local government area are Kurfi, Birchi, Barkiya, Rawayau, Tsauri, Wurma, Gwanzo, Kufan Agga, Kware, Tamawa and Tamu. However one man stands tall as one, if not the most prominent son of the soli. His name is Alhaji Aminu Kurfi popularly called Dan Arewa by his kingsmen.

A grassroot politician per excellence, a proud son of Katsina state and a kingsmaker who prefers to stay in the background and work magic. The success story of the All Proggessive Congress APC, in Katsina state will not be complete without a loud mention of Aminu Kurfi, a man whose impact as political leader has touched the lives of all APC politicians in the state.

There is no gain saying that Kurfi was very instrumental to the excellent performance of the party in the 2015 and 2019 elections and only recently,  he singlehandedly delivered the local govermnent area elections in the state to the party. No wonder, after all said and done, political bigwigs in the state met to appeal to the kingsmaker to come out of hiding and contest in the forthcoming National assembly election in the state.

So, about last week, the man of the people, officially made public his intention to contest for the position of candidate representing Kurfi central district in the national assembly.

That announcement has thrown the whole of Kurfi local government into wild jubilation.  Children and adults littered the streets, singing his praise. Market women left their shops early  while civil servants retired to nearby pubs to celebrate.

For more than one week, everyone in Kurfi district and neighbouring villages have worn a big smile on their faces. They gather in groups to discuss what they describe as the imminent dawn of a new era in the district even as they pray that Allah keeps them alive to witness the most important day in their lifetime.

For those who are still wondering as why one man will be so celebrated and adored, this writer will take time to carefully highlight the achievements of Aminu Kurfi a man whose benevolence has touched the lives of the rich and the poor  the weak and the strong,  the humble and the proud, the young and the old,  living and dead, married and divorced, widows and widowers. He is the game changer, the political juggernaut and the torchbearer.

He has a foundation that provides for widows, he has built schools for the poor, he has offered scholarship to more than two thousand katsina youths,  he has provided jobs for thousands of job seekers, he has sponsored many for medical trips within and outside Nigeria, he has encouraged many business men and women with financial incentives to thrive in their businesses and has helped to provide basic amenities for his community and other communities far and near.

Every year, during the annual Eid Kabir celebration Kurfi who some also call Balele, shares food and money to people far and near and sits at table to eat with the poor and downtrodden in society.
He is a National hero, a man whose name rings a bell especially because of the achievements he has made in sports. A lover of tennis and a big fan of Nigeria football.

Balele won the hearts of the Katsina people when he helped the state owned club gain promotion to the NPFL. The then chairman of Katsina United football club achieved this feat with meagre budget and was able to keep the club in the top flight until he eventually stepped down from that position to become chairman of the state football association.

Today, he is most remembered for the role he played in ensuring that a last minute court order by some perceived enemies of football, did not stop the 2018 NFF Election in his state. That process saw the return of Amaju Pinnick as NFF president for a record second term.

A friend of all and enemy of none, Kurfi has one eye on becoming a board member of the NFF in the fast approaching NFF elections but beyond that, he is also interested in making sure that the north returns to the mainstream of football administration and management. His hands are tied, his options are too numerous to count but he certainly has the capacity and ability to succeed wherever he finds himself.

Like the proverbial gold fish that has no hiding place, Dan Arewa is now set to possess all his possessions.
